Direct Access as a Service (DAaaS) is a sanctioned, API-based way to get the direct database access a cloud software vendor doesn’t give you — delivered as an organized, continuously refreshed, ready-to-query database of your own.
Modern cloud CRM and ERP platforms almost never give customers direct access to their underlying database. Sometimes that’s a deliberate policy to protect the platform. Just as often, it’s because the underlying database was never built for outsiders to query at all — it’s normalized for transaction processing, full of internal IDs and legacy structures, and effectively unreadable to anyone outside the vendor’s own engineering team.
Either way, the result is the same: your data exists, it’s yours, and you still can’t get to it in a form a reporting tool like Power BI or Tableau can use. You’re left exporting spreadsheets by hand, stitching together brittle point-to-point connectors, or settling for whatever canned reports the vendor happens to offer.
This is often called a “walled garden” — a platform that holds your data but restricts or complicates your ability to use it anywhere else.
Direct Access as a Service closes that gap using the vendor’s own official API — not scraping, not reverse engineering, not an unsupported workaround — to continuously extract and load your data into a dedicated, purpose-built database. That database is designed from the ground up to be easy to navigate: sensible table and field names, documented relationships, and a structure organized the way your team actually thinks about the data, not the way the source system happens to store it internally.
That second part is what separates DAaaS from ordinary data replication. Generic pipeline tools can move a copy of your data into a warehouse, but they hand it to you in its original, source-system shape — still complex, still difficult to query, just sitting somewhere new. A true DAaaS solution does the harder work of organizing and modeling that data for reporting, and it keeps it current automatically, on a regular refresh schedule, so the database never goes stale.
Spreadsheets pulled by hand, on demand. No automation, no organization — breaks the moment someone forgets to run it.
Automates the copy, but hands you the data in its original source-system shape — still complex, still hard to query, just sitting somewhere new.
Limited to whatever canned reports the vendor built. No access to the underlying data for custom analysis.
An organized, purpose-built, continuously refreshed database built specifically for reporting — using the vendor’s own official API.
MissionBI pioneered this approach for Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT and Financial Edge NXT — both cloud-hosted, with no direct access to their underlying databases. Whether by policy, technical necessity, or both, those legacy schemas were never built for outside users and would be extremely difficult to query directly even if access were granted.
MissionBI Essenta uses Blackbaud’s SKY API to continuously load and refresh your Raiser’s Edge NXT and Financial Edge NXT data into dedicated, purpose-built reporting databases — designed to be genuinely easy to navigate, with every table and field documented and organized by record type. The result is exactly what direct database access would give you, if Blackbaud provided it: a live, structured, fully queryable source that Power BI, Tableau, and other reporting tools can connect to directly.
We connect through Blackbaud’s SKY API — sanctioned, secure, and fully supported.
Your data is loaded into a dedicated database organized by record type, with every table and field documented.
Power BI, Tableau, Crystal Reports, or any tool that connects to a data source — quick, one-time setup.
Any cloud CRM or ERP that withholds direct database access — for the same reasons Blackbaud does — presents the same underlying problem. MissionBI Essenta is the first Direct Access as a Service solution. We’re already building what comes next.
